Cell growth leads to an increasing CO2 level. In the absence of any buffer systems the medium becomes acidic. To maintain the physiological pH (7.2 – 7.4) of a culture sodium bicarbonate is most commonly used in combination with carbon dioxide as a buffering system. Sodium Bicarbonate is also an essential growth supplement.
