Epithelial cells and tissue play an important role in the control of resorption and secretion plus the uptake of stimuli within specialized sensory cells. Normally epithelial cells have been cultivated in medium containing serum, but some factors tend to inhibit epithelial proliferation. Consequently, one of the most significant developments in isolation and propagation of epithelial cells is the use of specific basal media containing selected serum components like specific growth factors. Quantum 286 is a newly formulated base medium with a balanced mixture of trace elements and selected serum components supplemented with specific protein fractions of yeast and soybean extract.
