General
Most cell lines are cryopreserved with a serum concentration of up to 90% bearing the risk of microbial contamination. Furthermore storage under serum free conditions plays more and more an important role not only in the biopharmaceutical industry but also for academic research. Therefore PAA developed serum free cyropreservation media.
Serum free Cryopreservation
Cells can be stored in liquid nitrogen if cryoprotective additives are used. The most effective agent for preventing ice crystal formation is DMSO.
In contrast to classical cryopreservation media CryoMaxx I and II have a new formulation containing different buffer systems, disaccharides and the colloid dextran which suppress the ice formation during the freezing procedure more efficiently. In combination with different DMSO concentrations the cell viability will be increased significantly.
CryoMaxx I and II
CryoMaxx I and II are defined, serum free cryopreservation media and therefore qualified for preparation of cell banks and use in the biopharmaceutical industry. They contain DMSO as the active substance and different new cell stabilizers for best viability after thawing. Due to special components both media can be used for cell lines adversely affected by prolonged contact with DMSO.
Composition
CryoMaxx I (with 5% DMSO) and CryoMaxx II (with 10% DMSO) are based on an organ preservation medium with different saccharides, reducing agents and colloids for cell stabilization.
