With the discovery of stem cells in the embryonic and adult central nervous system neurobiological research gained new research tools. Neuronal cells can now be studied under proliferating conditions. Neuronal Stem Cells (NSC’s), with the potential for self renewal and to differentiate into neurons and glial cells can be grown in vitro under serum free conditions in the presence of specific growth factors. In vitro grown NSC’s are ideal for neuronal re-implantation experiments.

For proliferation of neuronal stem cells under defined conditions a serum free supplement without indu­cers of neural differentiation is necessary. With the development of our Neuronal Stem Cell Supplement defined conditions for optimal proliferation of neuro­spheres and neuronal stem cells are possible.

The supplement (50x concentrate) contains vitamins, hormones and other growth factors such as insulin, transferrin, catalase, antioxidants, fatty acids and fatty acid precursors. The complex mixture of different antioxidants reduces the reactive oxygen damage. Neuronal Stem Cell Supplement derived from B27 NeuroMix contains no retinoic acid. Removal of Vitamin A prevents neural differentiation of stem cells.

When added to Neuronal Base Medium or DMEM/Ham´s F-12, the supplement enhances the proliferati­on of neuronal stem cells. The proliferation rate can be increased by adding G5 Supplement.
