General
Foetal Bovine Serum (FBS) contains the highest concentration of growth factors compared with other sera. Therefore FBS is the optimal supplement in nutrient media for in vitro growth of different primary-, tumour- and stem cells.
Applications
For proliferation and differentiation of embryonic and adult stem cells high concentrations of growth factors, hormones and other growth stimulating additives are needed. In embryonic stem cells FBS can promote the formation of aggregates known as embryoid bodies. The embryoid bodies are important intermediates for further differentiation into neuronal or hematopoietic progenitors.
Only selected FBS can provide the different growth factors necessary. Normally FBS quality can vary from batch to batch. To provide growth factors in constant concentrations FBS must be tested with embryonic stem cells for efficiency. PAA's FBS ES cell tested gives the customer the guarantee for reliable and reproducible results in cultivation of stem cells.
Test Parameters
Foetal Bovine Serum, tested on murine embryonic stem cells, is specially tested for the ability to sustain undifferentiated cellular morphology of embryonic stem cells in the presence of LIF (leukaemia inhibitory factor). The screening includes plating efficiency, colony morphology and toxicity tests.
Extensive virus tests avoid the risk of virus contaminations. Our FBS is tested for PI-3, BHD-I, BVD-AB, and BVD-V and for mycoplasma.
