General
N-deacetyl-N-Methylcolchicine (Colcemid) is related to colchicine but it is less toxic. Colcemid depolymerises microtubules and limits microtubule formation. Appropriate dilutions inactivate the spindle fibre mechanism during metaphase. Colcemid is used in chromosome analysis during lymphocyte karyotyping and in amniotic fluid cell chromosome analysis.
