General
Carbenicillin belongs to the family of penicillin and is active against gram negative and gram positive bacteria. It inhibits the crosslinking of peptidoglycan by binding and inactivating transpeptidases and therefore prevents bacterial cell wall synthesis. Carbenicillin is sensitive to beta-lactamase and it is non toxic to plant cells.
Applications
- Selection antibiotic in transfection
- Transformation of dicot plants (e.g. Nicotiana tabacum) by infection with Agrobacterium (Ti-plasmid)
- Effective suppression of satellite colonies after transformation of E. coli
- Alternative to ampicillin
- Cells transfected with plasmids carrying the bla gene are resistant against Carbenicillin
