Bovine Pituitary Extract (BPE) is an extract prepared from bovine pituitary glands. It is used for primary or stem cell cultivation in serum free or serum reduced conditions where additional supplementation from crude tissue extracts is still required. The extract is used together with other growth factors, hormones and base media to reduce or eliminate serum in cultivation of non-fibroblast cell types.
BPE is offered as an aqueous solution because lyophilization reduces the biological activity of the powder.
The raw material used for the manufacturing of BPE is derived from bovines of New Zealand origin, where no cases of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) have been reported.
Recommended concentration: 35-70 mg/ml, depending on the cell type. An optimized basal medium such as MCDB 154 and MCDB 170 with proper hormone supplementation is required to ensure best results.
