Amphotericin B is an antifungal agent that is used in tissue culture for the control of yeasts and fungi. It acts by binding to steroidal alcohols in the cell membrane of susceptible fungi. Amphotericin B creates channels in the cell membrane resulting in an increase of membrane permeability. The loss of cations through the channels into the extracellular space and the inhibition of a number of membrane bound enzymes destroy the yeast or fungus. Amphotericin B has no effect on bacteria and viruses.
